Kent Animal Care and Control Shelter Event

It was a beautiful day and a mob of people (971) came to the adoption day at the Kent Animal Shelter. What a delight! There were vendors, rescues, music and even food!

Of course the star of the show and why we were there, were the dogs and other animals. They all deserve a forever home with a nice family. That is why so many vendors and folks came out to support and adopt. There were 105 adoptions through the various groups!

Like Penelope Jensen, Intuative Animal Communicator, penny@penelopecommunicates.com was a vendor who was able to read for Oso, a newly adopted pup. And many more dogs that were there along with their new owners.

Or Puppy Bat who was adopted by a girl who is in need of a dog in an assistance capacity. This little sandwich muncher just got his new best friend!

Puppy Bat really loves turkey, avacado, bread, lettuce, mayo.....

Batman on the other hand did not find his new owners at the event but just knows you are out there. He is a wonderful boy. Just look at him. He is Batman and looking for his parents to help him become Bruce Wayne his secret identity!

Batman is FOREVER cute. A total chick magnet!

With Ducati. What a beauty! She is such a darling!

And Josie who was a real riot. She says, "You gonna adopt me? Well punk, are ya? Please."

The Pacific Northwest Herpetological Society was really cool. The snakes and reptile folks. I did not take a shot of it but I spent quite a bit of time holding a corn snake. It was pretty cool.

The Chihuahua Rescue Group

This is Odie. He found his new best friend too.

One who stole my heart at the event is Daisy with Homeward Pet. She was so very soft and just a doll with everyone! She is just so beautiful.

Meow Cat Rescue was there with quite a few cats. The kittens are always so cute playing in their big tents.

And the Washington Ferret Rescue had a few adoptions too.

Spoil Animals a local grass roots effort was on hand.

Foggy Creek Cavey Rescue. They looked like Gerbals. Don't know much about them but they sadly, need a rescue too.

Send a card did not have any dogs but they were in full support!

Mini Aussie Rescue Group had some great dogs with them.

German Shepherd Rescue was there with some wonderful dogs, aren't they all!

Like Saxon.What a handsome fellow.

He was so mellow and just really did not have too many worries.

And Rosie who just does not look too much like a German Shepherd. Ha! People are so great. If they see a dog in need, there is no descrimination!

The King Counties booth has a great sign that offers some very sound advice. Be a responsible pet owner. Your pet deserve it since you made the choice to take on their life.

The Seattle Humane Society, working in concert with the County shelter event to help save our needy critters. I snapped off a shot while they were setting up for the day.

Animal Critical Care and Emergency Services.
These guys are great and they need blood. Please call them to set up an appt. to have your dog give blood!

South County Cats Rescue was next to Meow. There were a lot of cats! Please spay and neuter.

Austin, even though he is a Husky, was representing for the Malamute Rescue Group.

There are too many dogs and not enough money to reach everyone who is looking. Please spread the word, dogs, cats, ferrets, horses, reptiles you name it, needs to be rescued. Lets do our part to help those that are in transition and need to be well cared for until they find their forever home.

We can all just pitch in one afternoon and the results are amazing as to what can be accomplished. Especially being able to give love and encouragement to a scared, needy animal.

I don't think there is a better day than that. Don't we all need great days.

What A Great Birthday Weekend!

I had a wonderful time this weekend doing some of my favorite things. It was a nice birthday! I was able to help save 16 dogs from Post Falls Idaho. I met the dogs that were transported from Post Falls and I picked them up in Ellensburg and brought them to Bellevue and Sea Tac and Tacoma.

The dogs that came were Buddy a Lab pup full of energy and life as we know our labs to be!

Sidney a german shepherd mix. He was soft, beautiful and a really nice boy, who wanted to get on with running and playing!

Charley an 8 month old Bull Mastive. He is sweet as can be!

1 shepherd puppy we named Cole. I wish I was able to get a picture of him. What a sweet doll. I held him most of the way home!

There was a pregnant Cattle Dog and she ended up having her pups that very night!

Well, they were all wonderful and my Element was full of crates and 14 dogs! I wish I could have taken a picture of that too but it was so hot and I just wanted to get these dogs on the road to their destination and wind in their ears.

nDog and Uneek

With the start of the summer, dog events are picking up. How lucky we are to have so many dog lovers who cannot wait to celebrate them!

One of my favorites is nDog (Newcastle Dog) an event celebrating our canine companions and the organizations helping dogs in need. Featuring giveaways and demos by local animal groups, people and their dogs are invited for a fun-filled afternoon!

This event enjoyed great weather, a great turnout and a volume of donations.

Newcastle residents are having a great time and so are their dogs! This is Barley and he is so jazzed that they raised so many donations for all the dogs out there who need it! nDog was kind enough to ask if I would received those donations.

Of course I was delighted and wanted to share them with Animals First Foundation. They in turn were going to be able to use some and also pass along a great amount to Furry Faces Foundation.

The donations were dropped off to me and in the garage they went waiting for Heather with Animals First Foundation.

Heather was hoping that her car would be big enough but if it wasn't, that was a great problem to have!

Looks like it might fit but too early to tell...

Serch and Zappa are on hand to help, wait, just Serch, Zappa skipped the hard labor to go sit on the side yard and scratch her back and eat grass.

Serch could see we weren't too sure if it all would fit so he did his part to help make room.

He says hmmm, this ball looks like it is in the way. I want to do my part of course, so I think I know a way to make room.

Of course I told Serch that these were for the needy dogs so he said, I will just play with it for a few minutes to make sure it is working properly!

With one last push, we made it. Every nook and cranny was full and how GREAT is that!

Thank you to nDog and everyone who donated and all the companies who gave up their samples. From fosters to low income, your donations help folks keep their dogs and afford fostering them! Every little and large bit helps.

GOOD TIME CHARLIE KNOWS HIS FAMILY IS OUT THERE

Charlie is with his new family. He has come full circle. His new best friend is home all day with him and needs Charlies assistance. How great is that! We wish him the best. He deserves it! Check out these awesome photos.

His family was out there just waiting to find him.

Charlie is an amazing dog. I have been working with him and he is quick to learn and loves to please. He is losing his foster home this Friday. He suffers from being lonely and longing for a permanent place to be loved. His current foster home has really helped him with that. Let's not let him lose that ground!

He is a love bug! He watches TV. He can tell when animals are on vs. people. (Each highlight is a different Charlie video.) He plays with his busy buddy and stuffed hedge hog and really just wants to curl up with you on your lap.

He desperately wants a family with a yard and lots of people to show off all his awesomeness. Does not seem to care about long walks although he enjoys a good car ride. I noticed his favorite is to be with you at home snuggling!

Charlie is 71 lb American Bull Terrier. He is a very short hair, shiny boy who can sit, lay down, stay and leave it with treats on his paws!

He is an amazing talent and would be such a wonderful companion. He is kind-hearted and easy going, doesn't mind cats either! Oh yeah and CHARLIE LOVES KIDS!! LOVES them and wants tons to play with.

It's Time For Tye To Find His Forever Home!

TYE WAS ADOPTED!!!!! YEAH!!!

Our sweet, silly Tye is desperately hoping for a forever home. He suffers from some separation anxiety and really needs to go home with someone who has time for him. His ideal spot would be with someone who works from home, is retired or is able to take him to work with them. He's such a good boy, he just needs someone to give him a chance!

When he was just a puppy, someone cut off his ears and left him by the side of the road to die. A good samaritan found him there and after a blood transfusion and medical care he fully recovered. Tye is about 5-6 years old, neutered, up-to-date on his shots and microchipped.

Tye is playful and very loving. He loves being with people and gets along really well with other dogs. He's too interested in cats, so no cats please! He loves to go for walks, but mostly he just wants to snuggle up under your feet and take a nap.

PLEASE, click on the link, sign the petition and tell everyone you know. The media, your friends, anyone with a computer who can sign the petition and spread the word that we don't tolerate this type of behavior.

There is no excuse for animal abuse. It is how we treat those in our care, that defines our society. We must insure that as a society, we set a standard of acceptable behavior. That we show there is no tolerance and no acceptance for cruelty to the innocent.

MY AMAZING STORY OF MERRICK PET CARE

It all started when I approached Merrick to be a sponsor for a charity event. They liked the idea very much. I was not aware that they are so charity minded. And I can tell you, I had no idea how charity minded they really are.

They said they could donate sample bags of their new product Before Grain for the event. They asked how many bags we would need. I told them 1200. They did not bat an eye.

They could not wait to come on board. I thought I hit the jackpot. Sure enough, I did.

Merrick sent me a sample of the gift bags. It was impressive. There were cans of Before Grain for dogs and cats, 1 lb bags of dry Before Grain for dogs and cats and some sausages and flossies. I could not believe the size of each bag.

Well, with the snow and floods the delivery was not made in full for the event, so the bags were only filled with half the product. Since it was already here, I asked Merrick if I could donate the rest on their behalf to all the shelters and rescue operations in our area.

They said please do!

I actually ended up with 7 pallets/5000 lbs of food delivered to my garage. Every day I filled my Xterra to capacity and delivered;

Please support them and their business. It enables them to devote much needed and important time to help save one of the most beautiful breeds. The ever discriminated and abused Pit Bull. We had hoped to donate to Animals First Foundation in larger quantity than we did but without realizing it, we had run out of dog food. We still had cat food left so we were able to give them some dog but plenty of cat food.

Heather with Animals First came and took more cat food for the food bank in Burien in response to the call put out for pet food. They are in desperate need as there are many seniors in the area who cannot afford to feed their pets and themselves. AAUURRGGHHH!!!

Heather with Animals First is also going to be getting more of the cat food to take the to Ballard Food Bank who also put out a call for pet food.

My friends who own the Sauer Kraut German Deli and Bakery in Squim stop by and I was telling them what I was doing and how amazing Merrick is to donate all this food. I asked if their area was in need and they mentioned their neighbor Linda Kemp who has been saving cats for years. I was delighted to help her with a few cases and will post more info on her when I receive it.

He brought me many boxes of BG dry cat food which you gave to him.
I can't tell you how thrilled and how grateful I am in receiving them. I am sure he shared the story about my paraplegic yellow lab dog, paraplegic cat, diabetic cat and 2 other healthier kitties that I care for.

The no grain diet is what I feed my diabetic cat so this food was perfect .... I am also getting the other kitties to eat this way too.
I will take more time in the very near future to spend more time on your site, it appears you are involved in many good things with animal rescue and nutitrition etc...
I am a member of Peninsula Friends of the Animals, who have the Safe Haven facility here in Sequim.

I also would like to report that Merrick is going to do another amazing delivery of food for the horrible situation of 600 dogs in a puppy mill scheme outside of Seattle, that came to light this last week. I had just finished my donations when I learned of this atrocity and even after donating 5000 lbs of food they were going to do more!

WOW! In light of the times and economy Merrick is donating in record volumes. I give them 5 out of 4 paws. I have the utmost respect for their mission in this industry.

They are one of the two last privately owned pet food companies left and you can see how much of a difference that makes. Donating to the local grass roots efforts and some of the best food on the market for your pet. This is just what they have done for Seattle. I cannot imagine what they are doing in the rest of the country.

Senate Bill 5329/House Bill 1406

Endorsed by the Humane Society of the United States, the Washington State Federation of Animal Care and Control Agencies, and over 40 other Animal Welfare Organizations in Washington State Companion Animal Spay/Neuter Assistance:

SB 5329 and HB 1406 would help fund 70,000 or more spay/neuter surgeries each year on cats and dogs belonging to low-income residents of our state, and on feral and free-roaming cats. To the extent funds are available, it would also support the costs of spay/neuter surgeries on cats and dogs in the possession of animal shelters, animal care and control agencies, and other animal welfare organizations. The bill does not make spay/neuter surgery mandatory.

Wonders Never Cease

I had a great opportunity to meet Penelope Jensen at the Seattle Dog Winterfest. She advises on animal communication and understanding. I was very eager to get a chance to look into the mind of The Zappa. Our girl is a deep soul. Seemingly tortured and thus the desire to better understand her.

Penelope did a reading for me and it was just amazing. Spot on, inspirational and what she brought me helped me to find myself re-engaged with the light inside. Here I thought I was going to talk about The Zappa.

Sometimes we find ourselves lost. Our path does not go where we think they should and uncertainty can work it's way into our hearts and minds. After just 20 minutes with Penny, I really felt invigorated and back on track. It was cathartic and the freedom I was left with, is magnificent.

Tip the Week January 15, 2009

I was honored to give readings at The Seattle Dog Magazine Winterfest over the weekend. I meet many wonderful people and many truly amazing dogs! The one that stands out in my mind is a little black mix, Toby. He was found on the roadside, torn up, his left eye was out of it’s socket. He was a lucky boy; Ginger’s Pet Rescue provided life saving veterinary care and a foster home for him to recover in. Toby did lose his left eye, but not his spirit. This week’s communication tip is his inspirational message.

Toby’s Message:
I do not remember where I lived; I just know I had a Home. I was chased by a bigger dog. He lost interest and left me.(Toby is not sure how his “accident” happened). My life changed in that moment as did my purpose. I was determined to survive. In my recovering condition, I’m scared by all the new activities, places and things going on, yet I am hopeful. I see looks of horror, others of compassion, some just look away. Do not pity me, I am a Survivor, I have new purpose and I am stronger in character than ever before. I have Love on my side!
Love has brought me back from the brink of death and willed me back to life. Love is why I am, love is my purpose. I now look upon you, with just one eye, eye to eye we connect and I send my Love, 50 times bigger than I am, straight for you! Can you feel the most powerful force in the universe?? I can, and I gladly send it you! You who need hope, you who need direction, you who need a purpose!

The Story of Cory and Lulu

I decided that I would keep her after all. She is really attached to me and it would break my heart to see her unhappy. As long as we are together she is perfectly content. I am currently in the process of finding a dog friendly apartment that we can both live in.

The now before the beginning...
I was told that you folks could help with placing a really good pit bull? She is 4 or 5 years old, 1 ' 11" tall (top of her head when standing) and 60 pounds. She has a long history:

My Fiancee' and I found her roaming the streets of Portland when she was just a couple of months old. She was following a family who when confronted did not want anything to do with her, she had been following them "for about a mile" they said. She was pretty scrawny so we picked her up and took her home.

She took to My fiancee's dog immediately, they were inseparable. So we thought maybe we should keep her around. We brought her to the vet to get her checked out, see if she was registered. She wasn't registered but was malnourished. We got her spayed and chipped her.

After a couple of years my wife left and I was taking care of hte dog alone. She likes to run about 5 hours a day, and I was working 60-80 hours a week and it just wasn't possible. She is crate trained, but it's no fun being cooped up in a 3x4 foot crate all day long, only getting out once a day for a bathroom break. This was just all I could do for her.

I decided top adopt her out to a nice family with a couple of kids, a stay at home mom, another dog, and a big fencd in back yard. They loved her for a few months, then decided they didn't want her anymore, she was "too much work" even though I told them what she really needs is to be run for hours a day.

So, they ended up giving her to someone else, and she has been through 2 or 3 homes before being abandoned at the shelter in Troutdale Oregon as a stray.

The shelter got in touch with me, they were going to euthanize her, so I decided it would be better for me to go down and get her and try and find a new home for her.

My roommate has a house full of animals (cats, turtles, rats), and the landlord won't allow dogs at all, especially not pitbulls! And, even if we could keep her she'd still be in a situation with not enough exercise, and being confined to the crate most of the day.

So, I am hoping you can help me out. I really want to avoid Craigslist, I really don't trust it. Do you have any advice or contacts or anyone that you know who can help?

UPDATE TO RESCUE ADOPTIONS AT SEATTLE DOG WINTERFEST

Hey Folks,

Final count on adopted dogs from the event is 19. 19 saved dogs!! How amazing is that. How could you not call that a success. 19 dogs won the doggy lottery and almost 200 folks got to meet Cesar Millan.

Well, I say that is much to be thankful for! I know every rescued pup thinks so as they are no longer living in a box on a cement floor. They are in their new homes being loved, pet, fed well and sheltered in kindness.

Way to go Ginger!

Seattle Dog Winterfest 2009

What a great success despite the hiccups. Ginger's Pet Rescue adopted out over 10 dogs with 2 of them being special needs. How is that not a success! That is the great news to be shared.

There were a few confusing facts put out, that created some inconvenience. I know from experience, that can happen with a first event. As a vendor, I have had it affect me. Some times it becomes a live and learn situation and the next time, those are all avoided.

Everyone involved felt so bad that the patrons were stuck in a difficult situation. Every person volunteering took it personally, even though it was not anyone's intention or really anyone's fault.

Even though not every person had the experience they were looking for, it was all about charity. Perhaps the focus can change and the community can show support for successes of the event.

When passions run high, it is usually because someone cares. It was a great show of the love owners have for their dogs, that they wanted to share with them the experience of Winterfest.

Again, there was so much that was positive. Vendors involved with Winterfest, jumped right in to help in light of the confusion. I could not have been more proud for all the efforts to rally around and try to insure a succesful venue for our dogs in need. That is what it was all about.

That great show of commitment to the cause came from (to mention a few) Bark Central who were on hand with boarding and doggy play and Fetch Pet Care stepped up to give dogs walks so folks would be able to enjoy the show and get a chance to meet Cesar Millan.

For me, meeting Cesar Millan turned out to be an amazing experience. He is truly a great person! It was a once in a lifetime opportunity to meet him.

I can tell you, you can feel his energy, his calm and his strength. It is all supported with a humble respect and appreciation that explains his ability to rehabilitate owners and their dogs that suffer with poor behavior and such severe aggression. He truly believes in the importance of dogs natural behaviors and the balance of people in that equation. You can feel it in him.

You understand his ability to give calm and order and pack position to stressed, confused, aggressive dogs. Dogs that desperately need to live a kinder life. As much as Ginger saves dogs from death row, out of puppy mills and off the streets, Cesar stops them from getting there in the first place.

I heard a story of a family who had a dog that was aggressive and had poor behaviors. They did not know what to do but certainly did not want to give up their family pet. The wife was able to take Cesar's tips and training methods and save the family pack. Another success story for dogs and their 2 legged companions.

Not everyone can learn from a show or tapes, they need a hands on trainer. Like Deborah Rosen of Good Citizen Canine who put on a wonderful seminar during the event. She spoke on her specialty, Dog on Dog Aggression and how to deal with and retrain that behavior. There are always options. If Deborah is not in your area, you can read her website to find the tools you need to find a qualified trainer in your area.

The event not only made me feel good for it's charity goals and the adoption of so many dogs, it was a great reminder that sometimes, you just need to go with the flow. And who better to show us how to do that than our canine companions.

Spay Neuter program revisited

Kristy posted a comment on this issue. Thank you for that! It takes all of our voices and I truly appreciate your time. You bring up a good point and we certainly need to round out our legislation for the owner of a pet, with proper regulations for the support to facilitate the legislation. To insure that all parties are held to the highest level of behavior.

When we have regulations in place, we have a better opportunity to educate the importance of why the legislation is put into place. A great example is our seat belt compliance. It was met with great resistance as a law at first and now we have a 98% compliance rate because of the education of the enforcement and the benefits are, that it really save lives. That it saves us all money on insurance, etc. Now it is common practice, natural behavior.

I believe with all of my heart, that we have to change the basic philosophy of thought that we carry as a whole. The earth is not put here because of us, we are here because of the earth. Maintaining the delicate balance of all that lives on this planet is our responsibility. Our survival. If we do not help to continue that balance, we will suffer and who knows to what degree.

Our pet population is something that we are in direct control of being able to keep balanced. To reduce the suffering of unwanted animals. As we are the ones playing Mother Nature, mating animals for a variety of reasons. Profit or by accident/abandoned and not fixed to give an example. With so many older dogs abandoned in our shelters, were does it seem right to keep making puppies. Nature would never support the amount of puppies that we see just in the Little Nickel alone.

An unwanted dog in the shelter, started out as a cute puppy that needs to be trained to become a great dog. Too much work, a lifestyle that was not conducive to the time it takes, behaviors that you don't know what to do with, all result in an unwanted dog.

Thus the sheltered dog is now waiting for us to determine it's fate, while it's living on a hard cement floor surrounded by a cage, with the loud echo of fear and entrapment. The overwhelmingly crowded, solitary conditions go against every grain of a roving pack animal. The results that manifest themselves are depression and stress related behaviors that they can do nothing about.

We really need to change the structure of our shelters too. There will always be a need for a transition place. Life shifts. We have all experience that in our lives and thus, so would pets. Educating our community, especially our children on the importance of a proper way to help house our pets in our home or in transition, is part of the true cause and effect that will reduce over population and the need for shelters. Plus, they give us so much. Exercise, structure, responsibility and they teach us other, simpler ways to enjoy life.

Reducing the over population of pets, increasing the proper, respectful ownership of pets and creating a truly balanced place for them to reside if there is not a home, is our challenge. They seem daunting in some respects. I believe there is no limit to what we can accomplish if we work together. There is no limit to how we can benefit all that needs it, as a community.

When issues come up that need to be addressed, I find most of the discussions preliminary. Kristy's comments made me realize that we should evolve our discussions further.

Even with our different opinions, we are trying to reach the same end. We need to strive to find common ground. To bring our opinions together to accomplish our goals. If we take our discussions farther down the line, perhaps we can find where our opinions meet.

Homelessness is the single leading cause of death for healthy cats and dogs in the United States. About five million animals are killed in our country’s shelters each year.

In Washington State, a survey of shelters revealed that over 60,000 cats and dogs were reported euthanized in Washington shelters in 2005. The number of animals actually euthanized is higher, since only one third of the survey recipients responded. Between 2001 and 2005, large shelters that consistently responded to the survey reported euthanizing between 45 and 48 percent of the animals brought to them each year. The euthanasia rate has remained at these levels for the last several years.

It's not just a matter of being humane. It costs a lot of money to handle homeless animals in shelter and through animal control agencies and rescue organizations. Washington State taxpayers spend millions of dollars each year to handle these animals.

The Sensible Solution
Spay/Neuter. The most effective and humane way to reduce the number of animals dying in shelters is a targeted, statewide spay/neuter program.

How this Will Be Accomplished
Using a network of private, public, and non-profit clinics and services around the state, spay/neuter surgeries will be performed on the categories most significantly contributing to the overpopulation crisis: cats and dogs belonging to low-income residents of Washington, and free-roaming or feral cats.

Similar programs have been established in other states, including Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, and Vermont.
The New Hampshire program was started in 1994 and in its first few years a 34-percent decrease in shelter admissions and a 75-percent decrease in euthanasia were reported. New Hampshire has also reported significant savings from reduced animal impoundment costs due to its program. As these states have shown, there is a better way to address the pet overpopulation crisis. An aggressive spay/neuter program is the more humane and effective solution.

Reduced animal care and control, and shelter costs. Controlling the cat and dog population will save taxpayers dollars by reducing the number of animals handled by local animal care and control agencies. One Washington shelter reported the average cost to handle an animal is $93. Stray animal pickup and delivery to the shelter costs an additional $150 to $200. For every animal that is not handled by animal control or shelters, the savings can be significant.

Reduced dog bites, suffering, and costs. Nearly two percent of the U.S. population, or 4.7 million people are bitten by dogs each year. In 2003, the Insurance Information Institute reported that dog bites accounted for a quarter of all homeowner’s liability claims, totaling $321.6 million. In 2007, the claims total had risen to $356 million. Research has shown that about 82 percent of serious dog bites and 92 percent of dogs involved in fatal attacks were not surgically sterilized. By focusing attention on spay/neuter to help address the problems of dangerous dogs, we can expect a reduced number of dog bites and injuries, less pain and suffering, lost time, legal costs, and liability.

It is not just the above but the true benefit is a healthy wanted animal. No animal should have to live in a cage without the natural life that nature intended.

Let's Get DIEGO a home!

I HAVE BEEN RESCUED! IN THREE HOURS. WAY TO GO DEBORAH AND HER LOYAL GROUP OF GOOD CITIZEN CANINES!
A friend of mine recently rescued a stray pit bull/lab mix, but found it too much for her apartment. I have some space and time (a yard and a bit of vacation left) plus I'm a sucker, so I have taken him in for now.

Diego is eager to please and very loving. He is also very active. Diego is still young, and learning quickly what is acceptable and what is off-limits (jumping, furniture, dining table, begging, my bedroom, etc).

He has a GREAT personality. After 24 hours in my house, he appears to be housebroken and not destructive, even when left alone. Right now he would like to play, but is patiently napping. He will be fixed as of next week.

Because Diego has energy, he needs regular exercise and obedience training- it's not very complicated, it just takes time, and it will really pay off. This dog has beautiful coloring and is quite intelligent (as well as being ridiculously funny)-

I wish I could keep him, but my schedule is too busy and only one of my cats has the gumption to stand up for himself (the other is a chronic scaredy cat and spent the night hiding under a bush in the neighbor's yard waiting for the beast to go away).

I'd be happy to speak with any interested parties- the sooner the better.

BTW the public perception of pits- based largely on the mishaps of abused or badly trained/bred animals in my opinion- is unfortunate but it is the owner not the dog that should be responsible. We're not sure what he is but the owners said he's a lab/hound mix. He looks a lot like a Vizsla but he wouldn't be purebred because of his nose color.

Cooper is 2 1/2 years old and for the majority of that life he's lived next door to my neighbors parents. He has spent a lot of his time over at their house because they adore him. They're both elderly and in poor health and Cooper has always been super gentle and sweet with them plus he's been a great companion.

Unfortunately the neighbor has decided to get rid of him and her parents can't keep him because they do not have a fenced yard. They tried building a kennel for him as he spends the majority of his time inside their house but every time they would leave him in the kennel he would climb the fence and go roaming the neighborhood. He was recently been picked up by animal control in Wenatchee and the owners were fined $250, thus the decision to 'get rid' of him.

When we brought Cooper back over the mountain her parents were in tears at the thought of him being taken to a pound and put to sleep.

Thus my plea to you. Do you know anyone that would be interested in a super sweet, gentle, loving mutt that can climb chain link fences.

Cooper is 2 1/2 years old, current on all shots until December, and micro chipped. He loves kids, the elderly, small dogs, big dogs, but is not a fan of cats due to a cat agressive dog the previous owners still have. Given his sweet nature I'm sure he could be brought to like cats but right now he wants to chase them. I've also attached a few pictures of this adorable boy, he looks skinny but he's been like that forever and my neighbors parents have tried fattening him up with good food and a few table scraps so he's quite spoiled.

My neighbor, and her parents requested that I ask anyone I know to see if they're interested in Cooper.

It is with great pleasure that I am bringing you Luca and Tasha. Beautiful German Sheppards that are our top Uneek Treats Tricks Bit tasters. Luca and Tasha came to us because of their food sensitivities. As with most dogs, the food and treats out there are just not the right way to go for their digestion.

Sandy was brought back to great health by the love and care of the incredible hearts and souls of Sandy's new family and Uneek Treats.

I wanted so much to share this story with everyone. This story is the reason I started Uneek Treats and my passion for all of life to be cared for in the best possible way. What we do in life, will make or break another life. Every animal deserved respect and care.

Sandy's time has come and you could not ask for a better ending! Please read and be warmed by this most amazing story and be ready to cry. Tears of love and joy ran down my face. Our Angel Sandy

The best gift that a friend never gave me is the silky-soft, ginger-coated mutt who came into my family’s life like a dandelion puff blown by the wind. When I see our Sandy standing in the backyard on a sunny day, his fur radiating in ever-changing shades of amber, orange and even red against the bright green grass, it is a dazzling sight. Along with his great beauty, Sandy is the embodiment of gentleness and quiet contentment, a testament to his golden retriever lineage. Even in the direst of circumstances, our dog wags his tail when he sees me there with him. It’s in his large brown eyes, too, so focused and knowing: Sandy understands that he will never again be left behind.
About fifteen years passed since our family had canine companions. It was, according to Mom’s declaration, “No more dogs!” when my dad’s tireless male mix was found rigid in the yard, soon followed by his lifetime female companion, a husky. We faithfully obeyed her edict… and found ourselves getting fishes, rabbits and a bird. But then we moved, and for many years did not have any pets. We didn’t think we missed anything.

I first saw Sandy at a friend’s home, set in a relatively undeveloped area where people hunted and burned their garbage out back. Sandy was free-roaming and looked like a moving mound of matted, dirty reddish-blonde fur. He walked crooked, smelled funny, and was missing teeth, so I didn’t exactly run to pet this wino-doggie. To tell the truth, he frightened me. But Sandy came and sniffed me. I slowly put out my hand, and his welcome licks came without hesitation. Which led to my patting him, and soon I was smiling and falling in love. He was inquisitive and affectionate, but did not demand attention. I learned Sandy was between 13-16 years old and had a history of being deserted. Still, his chocolate eyes glowed with trust, made more beguiling with his thick eyelashes. He looked into my face and smiled. I sensed he knew all about me.

“Poor boy,” I told him, “when’s the last time you had a bath?” His owner roundly dismissed me, saying Sandy had the whole bayou to bathe in anytime he wanted. By that time, Sandy and another dog lapped at the pond-water before bounding off again. How could I argue this dog wasn’t comfortable and happy?
It wasn’t until a few months later that Sandy’s owner finally installed a fence, a begrudged admittal that my fears weren’t so foolish. The guy was traveling out-of-state for a week when a car hit Sandy. I later learned a neighbor, driving a big Chevy, was responsible. The owner refused to let me bring Sandy in for an exam, even at my expense. Over the cellphone, he justified Sandy’s suffering with, “He’s an old dog anyway,” but somehow expected the dog to get better on his own. If that didn’t happen, the owner said he’d shoot Sandy when he returned. I told him I’d take care of Sandy regardless of cost and energy, because I loved him.

That day, three years ago this month, was my first day dog-sitting. It was also the day we quite informally adopted Sandy and began his medical care. X-rays showed his right front leg had fresh breaks in two places, and he suffered arthritis. We expected to house-train and walk him, but he got it from day one. Six weeks later, the vet removed Sandy’s cast. His bone was healing under the plates and screws and he quickly acclimated to being indoors. During that time, Sandy quietly watched us and we marveled at him, this sudden addition to our lives. We nicknamed him “Puppy” for his baby-face and soft, needy demeanor.

Sandy started going to the vet for regular check-ups, dental cleanings and to manage his arthritic pain – surprisingly, and thankfully, his only major health problem. Our family noticed that although Sandy can be playful, he has never really played with us. Sandy was abandoned as a puppy for lack of hunting skills, so maybe he was busy just trying to survive. My mom, thinking of Sandy’s journey to find a home, wanted to give him the lofty name “Odysseus.” But “Sandy” stuck, and his coat, now full and silky, continually changes color from butterscotch to cinnamon-spiced pumpkin.

His fur is the definition of lustrous; to run both my hands through its warmth is a delight of no end. I watch him exploring the neighborhood, and on the good days, he’s a fireball of stout heart and buoyant spirits. Even on his slow days, he gets more “Hellos” than I. With his irresistible face and temperament, we wonder how anyone could have ignored him. But then, too, we hear of pet dogs left in foreclosed homes, or those tossed for fun from an overpass. The cruelty man inflicts is an immutable element of every generation.

I don’t know how we managed before Sandy, and we’ll never know much of his early life. Despite the unkindnesses this dog faced, he greets everyone with the same contagious smile, energetic sniffs and heartening tail-wag. He has shown us that we must be gentler and forgiving, and that the finest reward is to be home with those you love. Best of all, Sandy is proof that Mom doesn’t always listen to herself: “No more dogs!”

Hurray for King County Our Voice Does Matter!

As an advocate for the humane treatment of animals in King County, I wanted to make sure you had heard that the Metropolitan King County Council voted unanimously on April 28th, 2008 to approve nearly $1 million in one-time funds for immediate upgrades at King County animal shelters. I was pleased to vote in favor of Ordinance 2008-0224, releasing this funding.

This funding comes from public donations to the shelter and reprogrammed capital improvement and public health funds. It will pay for immediate, short-term shelter and operating improvements that include:

· New dog runs,
· New cat cages,
· Increased shelter staffing,
· Improved coordination between shelter staff and community volunteer organizations,
· Increased veterinary services at Kent and Bellevue and disease control,
· Reimbursable medical supplies for volunteer veterinarians,
· Web cameras in animal housing areas,
· Enhanced spay and neuter outreach, and
· Independent oversight of shelter operations by the King County Auditor’s Office.

This action will immediately help save lives and provide hope for the animals in King County’s custody. As you know, in recent years the Metropolitan King County Council has been taking proactive steps to comprehensively improve King County animal control, care, and enforcement against cruelty.

Council Initiatives and Goals:
The Council’s goal is to create a model animal welfare program at our King County animal shelters. A model program would:
· Reduce the rates of euthanasia for adoptable, healthy animals
· Ensure that animals have access to life saving programs including adoption, medical care, socialization, and behavioral modification,
· Reduce the number of homeless pets through the provision of low-cost, high volume spay and neuter services, and pet retention education,
· Pursue animal cruelty investigations, and
· Create partnerships with volunteers, fosters, rescue groups, stakeholders, and the media.
Immediate Solutions:
Starting this week, local veterinarians will offer their services to help provide medical care for the animals at King County’s two animal shelters. We will develop long-term strategies to improve the conditions at the animal shelters, but the animals in our care today need our help as well. Our generous community of veterinarians is ready to help and we are now calling them in.

Within the next month, the shelters will receive new cat cages, dog runs, and continued operational reforms starting immediately. These measures will help alleviate the shelter health crisis and prevent future overcrowding and suffering while the County moves forward with longer term strategic plans.

In addition, more and better trained staff will be scheduled during the peak animal population months during the summer. An additional veterinarian and a veterinarian technician will be brought on to provide ongoing medical care and spay/neuter services.
The Council and the Executive reached an accord. Funds will be invested to reduce crowding and the spread of disease at shelters in Kent and Bellevue. These shelters house approximately 13,000 stray, abandoned, and neglected animals each year. Funding will come from existing public donations in the Animal Benefit Fund, new Capital funds, and money redirected from the County’s capital improvement funds.

Long Term Strategies:
An inter branch work group is being assembled to analyze critical shelter functions. This group will provide recommendations on how the County should provide animals services in the future, if at all. After a complete public process, the Council will review and decide whether or not to adopt these recommendations.
Ultimately, we will ensure the animals in King County’s shelters receive humane treatment with better care and medical services. A collaborative effort by the Council and the Executive has produced an agreed upon set of values showing our commitment to working together as branches of government in making King County a stronger and more humane place to live.

What You Can Do To Help:
If you have been thinking about adopting a kitten, cat, puppy, dog or other animal, we would like to ask you to visit the shelters and find your pet. Help our animal friends – take a pet home from the shelters!

I deserves a great home or foster! I am desperate. I have come from nothing and done so well and due to unforeseen circumstances in their own life, my foster parent could not keep him. He is a VERY loving boy and responds to many commands. We want to ensure he continues to get training. Can you help??

To save Caden from going to a shelter and most likely being put down, he is currently being boarded at Rainier Vet. Please understand that Caden does not do well being kenneled and we are concerned he will start to mentally and emotionally deteriorate.

We urgently ask for a foster to please step in. He has become accustomed to home life and has blossomed from it. Assistance is also needed with the boarding costs so he won't have to go to the shelter. The charge is $20.00 per day.

GUNNER HERE! COME GET ME

Gunner is as sweet as can be. He really needs and deserves a loving home. Where he lives now, there is no time for him and his owners know they must do better for Gunner. Gunner is a neutered, five year old yellow lab, who likes most other dogs. He likes cats a bit too much thus not a good mix.

He is great with kids of all ages, very playful and sweet. Knows several commands. Is updated on his shots. He would love an owner willing to help him continue to bond and learn. Prior to this owner, he was in a bad situation and while he has come nearly all the way, does get afraid of loud noises.

This is a special one for two reasons. Her current owner, Paul started as a client and now he's a good friend. He's a sweetheart of a guy and took Miley in from Ginger's Pet rescue last summer.

Miley has a ton of energy and loves to run around and play with other dogs. She's a little shy around new people, but as soon as you rub her ears or her belly she'll love you forever. She's good at playing fetch and your arm will get tired before she does :-)

She's ok with cats, one of mine she has no problem with, the other she likes to chase (I think mostly cause the other cat is a little afraid of her and runs away).

She really is a great dog, I just don't have the time to spend with her any more and I don't feel like she's getting the best life from me. I hope that she can find a new home and a new buddy to run around with.Miley has been through private training with me and also a group class. She's incredibly smart. She goes to doggy day care a few days a week and does really well!

Delano California Mass Shelter Pull Out Effort

I can't believe this Delano California mass shelter pull out effort. THEY NEED HELP!! All the staff is older 70 years old and volunteers.

If you would like to help please, spread the word that Delano needs spay/neuter help at the shelter and City/State funding.

They are killing too many great dogs..it's horrible chain link fence and tarps.. that's about it.

Kirsten Anderson is 25 great girl dog walker/trainer (pits) saw the dogs on www.dogsindanger.com and loaded a rented truck full of crates and drove to Delano and pulled as many as she could.

There were babies sickly ones with mange and worms. Babies 6-8 weeks old left to die in the dirt.

Pregnant momma's (my vet has one) the story is an eye opener of the huge problem the Delano CA Animal Shelter faces. They have absolutely no funding.

Where it is now is we need medicine. $$, worming med, antibiotics..any donations.

DUKE SWEET DUKE!!!

Duke is a 2.5 yr-old, sweet lab mix boy, neutered, loves kids and seems great with his food but is not good with cats. He is a very energetic boy.

He's young, athletic, loves to play, run and jump. He is anxious to please. Needs an experienced dog lover to continue his lessons in manners and obedience so he can hang out with other dogs, reach his potential and become a great lifelong companion. He is quite beautiful and has long legs eager to exercise. He would do well as a hiking/jogging companion. He is located in Longview, Wa.

Duke’ s story was a sad one. He was living in filth. He was allowed only within one foot of the opening of the sliding door to be greeted by any human hands. He never got the loved he needed and is ready. Trust us, he is worth it..and then some!

Ricky is now here with us and living inside. He is just an awesome, gentle, kind dog.

He gets along with all the other dogs, big and small and he loves people. He sleeps in our bedroom at night on a soft dog bed and I know he is so happy and at peace and warm.

He is great with children and we take him with us and into stores to be socialized and he does draw people to pet him. He is slowly starting to fill out and will be quite a handsome Boxer when he has more body fat and has developed muscle mass. I did find out he is about 3-4 years old, which I like, because he has matured.

He will make the right person a solid, faithful companion and I so hope I can find a great home for him.

I have 27 dogs at this time at my home and it is overwhelming at times. We don't get many foster homes in this area and there are so many many dogs that are homeless. The majority of the time my fosters run in different packs and are not kenneled and it has worked out fairly well most of the time.

The Yakima Valley is one of the poorest counties in the state and we have a 50% minority population and with this, the culture of the people is of that so often dogs are lowest on their priorities if on the list at all :o(

Ok, am I the cutest young doggy you have ever seen in your life? I think I am! I didn’t know it until my foster mom saved me from sure death and showed me love and then I really came out of my shell. In fact, I am super smart and even learned the doggy door and got potty trained really quickly!

Let me tell you about me (it’s all about me now I finally realize).

I love kids. I love cats. I love humans. I love doggies. I am about five months old. I am a boy.

I am neutered. I am an American Bulldog mix. I am adorable and a great dog. I love love. Shy at first, but warm up and then love to cuddle. Yum!

Learned to sit in 24 hours. I am worth it! Woof!Foster mom says “the mellowest, best puppy I have ever seen in a house!” Really want to go to obedience school. I will earn an A. I promise.

I need a home.

I was saved from running down a busy street. Mike is great but his dogs don't think there is enough room for the three of us.

I need to find Mack a Home. He is very sweet and wants to be with me all the time. He rests his head on my feet, sleeps by the side of the bed and lays against the tub while I shower.

Like most Rotts, he just wants to be held….

He is about 1 year old Lab/Rott mix ( I am guessing) and could use some more training. He knows sit, down, off and shake.

Since I found him I have had him neutered and de-barked (it was that or face the angry neighbors) and gotten all his vaccines.

Mack gets along with other dogs and cats and kids just fine……I have two big dogs now and there is only so much room.

HELP ME, I AM NEGLECTED AND PADLOCKED!

Pictured is Ricky, a beautiful Boxer neutered male. He has been living on the end of a 3' chain for 9 months now. He is losing weight due to the cold and because the person supposed to be feeding him just hasn't bothered doing it. I received a call asking if I could take the dog into rescue.

When taking the pictures of Ricky, I found him friendly, easy to approach, and work with, as much as I could. He has a tight heavy chain around his neck attached with a padlock that cannot be opened with the key.

Ricky has been around children and does fine with them but because of his confinement, when he is let loose he plays too rough with the small ones due to his excitement and freedom.

We are trying to find the original 'owner' of the dog to see his age and possibly some history on him. I am judging him, GUESSING actually by his teeth, to be around 2 years of age or so.

If someone would be interested in giving Ricky his forever or foster home, we can get him into my rescue and put him with my other foster dogs and see how he does. I CANNOT keep him for a long term as I have so many other dogs here at this time and cannot work with Ricky ,as he probably needs, on training.

Petapoluza 2008! Fremont, WA

Congratulations on one year in Fremont Petapoluza!

They have everything you could want. The best quality food, treats and gear. Both for cats and dogs. They also have a dog wash station. Just the perfect thing to get your pup ready to go out on the town.

When I arrived at Petapoluza to set up for the event, I was delighted to see COLA there. Citizens for Off-Leash Areas.

Theo is getting a big hug from his Mom, COLA volunteer.

We were glad to be able to donate. Like SODA, they maintain the parks we enjoy with our dogs. Both of these organizations can always use volunteers as well as monetary donations.

The Seattle Humane Society was there representing their pups that need fosters and adoption.

We also had Ginger's Pet Rescue. Ginger specializes in Death Row dogs. She has the biggest heart and the biggest need for fosters. Please contact her if you are interested in fostering, transporting, donations, dog walking or training.

From the minute I set up, there were great clients and fun pups to meet! Everyone who came in was so cute, well behaved and a whole lot of fun to take pictures of.

Meet Keeva, she is a cattle dog who is currently in foster and needs to find a permanent home. Foster Mom loves Keeva and Keeva loves everyone! She is smart beautiful and a real good girl!! She played so well with others and did even better just hanging around. As you can see, she's enjoying all the action.

Frankie is a reject Cattle dog (so says his foster Mom.) He is so cute, fun and what a great personality! I got along great with him but perhaps he has issues with other dogs. His temperment would work well for a single owner or couple who do not have another dog and want to be one dog owners. These guys are loyal, smart and can learn anything you want to teach them! Frankie stole my heart! How about you... I mean really, just look at that smile.

Corky and Sadie are Bischon Poodle mixes who are a pair if I ever saw. They don't seem to like other dogs too much but they sure love each other, people and of course Uneek Treats! They are available through Furbaby rescue. They will only go as a pair.

Nikko is just getting started in life. Can you believe he is only 10 weeks! What are they in store for!!! He is the most gentle bundle of fur I have had the pleasure to pet. What a sweet heart.

Check out Kong. A Doberman to beat all. What a beauty! Kong has a great time hanging out and saying hi to everyone. She knew what she wanted so after hello's her and Mom got right to it.

Clara is a lab that could not be happier to be at Petapoluza! Check out Clara saying hey!

Cody is a Cattle Dog mix. Cody loves Uneek Treats. Cody was so darling and just look at that face! What great ears. All the better to hear you say, "Want a Uneek Treat Cody?"

Schnitzel is a Bull Mastiff. Soft, sweet and just look at those jowls! How patient she was when Mom was buying all her favorite things! I got kisses and love. Aaahh!

Kylie a Sheltie and American Eskimo mix bounded into the store like she owned the place. Full of energy and all that grace that you will only find in such a refined girl.

SEAHAWKS TEAM UP WITH SEATTLE HUMANE SOCIETY TO COLLECT MUCH-NEEDED PET FOOD
SATURDAY, JANUARY 5 BELLEVUE, WA (January 2, 2008) – Saturday morning, January 5, at the Seattle Seahawks playoff game, the Seattle Humane Society will collect much-needed pet food for their Pet Food Bank. With the needs so great in Washington’s flooded areas, local food banks, including the Seattle Humane Society’s Pet Food Bank, are suffering. Right now, the Pet Food Bank supplies are down 40 percent from this time last year. The need for pet food is critical; the Pet Food Bank feeds more than 1,000 pets of low-income community members, senior citizens, and people with HIV. Game-goers are asked to bring any dog and cat food. There are no restrictions, but the greatest need is for dry cat food. All kinds and types of pet food are appreciated. It will be easy to find the collection barrels. Animals First Foundation is Calvins Savior! Now He Needs A Permanent Home!

Animals First Foundation was very concerned about the lack of time we had to work with for this little dog.

Last night I was able to find a foster and someone contacted me for possible adoption. Early this morning our wonderful volunteers picked up this little one (now named Calvin) and he is being checked out at the vet’s office today. We will do our best to find him a great home. He loves people and is just a darling boy - very eager to please and love.

A special note about this situation that we will start posting on “rescue groups only” situations. Someone posted Calvin on Craigslist which is not allowed by the Everett Shelter (because he was not available for public adoption) and by Animals First Foundation. We do not want to tarnish our working relationship with any shelter by not following the rules. So please, we know it was done with good intentions, but do NOT post ANY of our shelter rescues on Craigslist. We will start noting that on our circulations. We do not want to stop being asked to help because of lack of cooperation as we do not have any control over who gets our e-mails. Thank you for your understanding.

Good Thing For Great Folks! They Still Need Our Help

Carmon from Grant County Animal Outreach has been attempting to place Big Dog, a 2 year old American Staffordshire Terrier Mix.

With the banning of bulling breeds and the phobia associated with them, she hasn't had any luck. This big boy is great with other dogs and excellent with children (please see below).

He will be receiving 1 week of professional training this month as well. He is neutered, microchipped and up to date on all shots, including rabies. Yesterday, I received a call from the Manager of one of the vet clinics we work with. She offered to foster Daisy!!

So, this little girl will be taken on by Animals First Foundation and will be going to work with her foster mom at the clinic. She will receive a full medical exam and we will do our best to ensure a speedy recovery. Thank you for your concerns.

Daisy is a 4 week old Pit Bull puppy who was abandoned. I think she was tossed out of a car. JERKS!!!!!

She was brought in to the VCA veterinary specialty hospital in Lynnwood with a broken front leg. The leg is now in a tiny cast and she was given her first shots.

Elvis, saved by mere hours, out of a crowded shelter – but no place to go. Loving foster hands took him in until the right home was found. How good is this? Elvis, live long baby!

Elvis is a 2.5 yr old Boxer/Pitt mix. Male, neutered. Medium size. House trained. Indoor/outdoor (usually only outside on nice days and during play). Knows basic commands (come, sit, stay, lay down, off).

Loves to fetch, swim, run, go in car, hike, camp etc. He has a ton of energy and still acts like a puppy.

Loves people; a true best friend and a real sweetheart. Can be introduced to other dogs; should always be supervised due to insure that there is good behavior all around. OK with cats.

Needs responsible, loving owner with secure yard (he can jump very high so a 5-6ft fence is necessary. He wants to be everywhere you are but will wait patiently at home when he can't be with you.

We have two dogs, but work keeps us too busy to be able to provide enough attention for both. He needs a new home so he can be given the love and attention he deserves.

Free to good home. We can bring him to you. We will want to confirm safe living situation to ensure he'll be in good hands.

Industry Graphics and Mobile Spay Van

Industry Graphics and Uneek donated $150.00 to the Dugan Foundation's Spay and Nueter Van. The boys in the shop were kind enough to start a swear jar. They are not only cleaning up their language but helping rescue efforts too. It was wonderful that they wanted to help!

It meant so much to the mobile van. That van does such good work in the Tacoma area. Formally the Pasado Van (Pasado purchased new ones.) It is set up for lower income to be able to afford to fix their dogs and cats.

What a great opportunity for the community and for Industry Graphics! Thanks guys!

My Saturday started out at the 1st annual Urban Paws Event at the Marcato in Tacoma. We met so many wonderful pups and their owners and the other great vendors that were there.

Check out Levi, what a beauty. I was so lucky to get the Greyhound lean.

Next To Nature came to show their support and pass out grain free food for Cats and Dogs, treats and other fun items.

What a GREAT photographer. Brand new to the scene and a huge pit bull advocate. He knows so well, what we know to be true. It is the owner, not the dog on almost every occassion. Please get involved with Ariel Payopay and kazuo Nakashima of the PITBULL FORUM.

After the event, we packed the family into the Xterra and hit the road for Vancouver, BC. We decided to deliver to Fetch. We could not be more excited to have our treats there. What a great store!

We always love it when we get there. Vancouver is amazing and just different enough from Seattle to keep us busy every time we go.

We stayed at the Opus Hotel in Yaletown. Talk about being pampered! They had water out for Serch and The Zappa. Special dog packs w/ treats and food and other essentials.

I had a Modern Dog magazine (Canadian mag) and Pete got cupcakes for his birthday. How great! We have never stayed in such posh quarters. The room was the size of a postage stamp but since we didn't stay in the room very much, no matter.

Serch and Zappa are ready to go and see the town. Let's go MOM and DAD! HURRY!

Zappa did not like the elevator. Once we had to shove her in. Once it started moving she would squat until it stopped. I did not like that she was afraid but it was too funny! She finally got the hang of it on the last trip out.

Serch and Zappa just wanted to get out and see the town. So that's what we did. Everyone loved them and they had the best time with all the new smells. I wonder if Canada smells any different to The Zappa?

It was a quiet ride home with everyone sleeping. Rolling back into town Sunday early evening.

THIS IS BEAUTY! An English pointer/ Pit-bull mix.
She is a year old, spayed, vaccinated and I am not sure if she is micro chipped. She is free, only to the perfect home that will love her for life. She is a dog I am fostering part time until she finds a home. She was taken from an abusive home where the male was very harsh with her and now she is a bit skittish around men.

She is doing ok with Scott but still has some reserve. I think in time she will be great. She plays great with our two dogs but would love to have her way with our cat if you know what I mean.

I don't know how she is around kids. She loves to cuddle on your lap or in bed with you. She is crate trained and now knows how to use a doggie door!!

I took her to the lake for the first time yesterday and discovered she had never been near water. She ran into the lake at full speed and you could tell by the look on her face she was confused as to why the land was giving way under her feet! She stopped when she was up to her neck in the water and slowly turned around and came back to shore. After that she liked the water.

She loves to play fetch! She has not had anyone in the one year of her life teach her any manners or to sit, stay, off ect... She will need someone patient and to give her some lessons. She doesn't bark much but she does have a little snore about her when she sleeps.

Beauty luckily does not know her name very well since it was given to her by the Covington Veterinary Clinic back in August when they received her. We do not know what her name was before so they call her Beauty. I think anyone could easily change her name and that would be fine. I am working on finding Beauty the perfect home for her.

I am taking her on weekends right now just to get her out of her kennel she has been cooped up in since August and to help her get some social skills. However, my other goal in taking her for the weekends it to get her exposure to anyone who may want to adopt her. Uneek Meets Cesar Millan!

My friend Karleen invited me to go with her to be in the audience for the taping with Cesar Millan on Northwest Afternoon . It was fun and his pitbull “Daddy” is a very sweet dog and a good “spokes dog” for pitbulls. We were able to give Cesar Uneek Treats too.

We met Cesar on accident walking to the studio. We thought he was just some guy walking his dog to daycare then we realized it was him he shook our hands-funny moment. We were able to network the Towels for Shelter Drive and talk about the local rescues of course.

We also were invited to do a public announcement for the Towels For Shelters. If you have any old towels that you would like to donate for the local shelters spay and neuter program I would be happy to take them. This is a very “green” recycling program benefiting the earth, people and animals.

Thanks Karleen for inviting me and giving me a chance to find out about the opportunity to share our shelter needs with our community through Public Service Announcements. All rescue operations should take the opportunity to do one. We will be able to spread the word. Get more involvement and decrease the overwhelmed shelters.

I Have Been Rescued, Now I Need Saving!

This darling female puppy was rescued last night from a very abusive situation according to the person requesting help.

She now temporarily lives with several dogs of different sizes that she gets along very well with. She also gets along with the horses and chickens outside the house. She loves to play and plays very sweetly with no aggression or shyness. Hopefully she has not been too affected by the level of abuse she has experienced. Little one is not fixed but the caretaker Michelle, made sure she got her first set of shots. If she is not spayed she has most likely not received her complete series of vaccinations. Little one is housetrained (no accidents) and rides very well in the car.

Unfortunately they cannot keep her and the closest shelter is the Everett Shelter. They know the risk of putting her there. While they live on Camano Island Michelle is willing to bring the puppy to any rescue or loving home that can open their doors to her to save her and offer her the chance for a happy, safe future. Coco and Sully, Here Are Their Stories

Coco is a 4 year old Lab/Boxer mix once used as a guard dog.

A family took her in and worked with her to help her recover from her negative training. But now she needs help. She recently attacked a small dog and the owner is concerned about their 1 month old baby (although Coco has not shown any aggression towards children). This might complicate any potential adoption for Coco but it’s certainly not impossible. I also do not know the circumstances of the attack. Please read more details below about her situation.

Sully was on "death row" at the Humane Society and something remarkable happened.

Someone there decided (we don't know who and if we did they could get into a world of trouble) this dog was so amazing that he just couldn't be destroyed. Needless to say, there is a place in heaven for that person, whoever it might be.

Apparently, Sully is the sweetest 2 - 3 year old Pit Bull that anyone there had ever met. Gets along with with people, other dogs and even cats. Please respond, if you are interested to Lynette Young, who owns the ClipNClean Pet salon. Anyone who knows Lynette also knows that she is the Patron Saint of Tacoma's unwanted, lost and otherwise discarded animals. She's on the board of the Humane Society and they called her to take Sully in. Of course, she did!

Towels For Shelters and The Seattle Humane Society Bellevue

What a wonderful idea to offer free spay and neuter. It is so important to help maintain the right balance of pets to available families.

Because the Bellevue Humane Society is offering FREE spay and neuter services, they are going to need supplies. Our Towels For Shelters Campaign would like to donate to them, the towels given by the Seahawks and other local businesses.

Spay and neuter should not be a select program here and there. Our unwanted pets overwhelm the resources to deal with them. Just as with many facets of our society, we should be proactive, not reactive. It truly costs so much less in every way possible.

There is no one without the whole. To sustain is to balance. That should be the goal. Creating a balance at every level.

She is very sweet but the foster is too busy to work with her and a dedicated commitment is required. With all of the Pits in need this may be a long shot but I am hoping someone will step up to the challenge. She’s been passed around so much that she needs stability.

Des Moines on a Wonderful Saturday

What a wonderful day it has been. I loved that we missed the bad weather but Fall is surely coming. You can tell by the farmers fare and a cooling in the air. Peppers, potatoes, corn, apples. Great fresh organic food that is locally grown. FLowers full of fall colors make up wonderful displays for your table.

We met quite a few heroes today. Here is Emmy Lou. She is 5 months old a rescue and the best pall in the house. She goes out, everyday, down the long drive, to get the morning paper.

Bianca just got adopted that very morning. She was adopted out from a loving home that could not spend the time with her that she needs. Dogs need to run, play and be social. They are roving pack animals. Thank you to the wonderful parents who realize that and the wonderful family who adopted her.

Meet Copper, he is just 3 months old and a sweet, sweet boy! He was so soft, loving and still had puppy breath! His parents are just so proud. He is a loved boy!

What an adorable girl. She is aptly named Penny Pincher. On her way to the groomers, she decided that her and Dad needed to stop by and check out the market. Dad credits Penny for saving his life with her unconditional love. Penny was the best gift a sister could give.

Well, we still have a few more Saturday's before the season ends. but that does not stop folks from stalking up. We had one customer that had to buy a supply of our Uneek Treats Pizza Crust for her dog and cat! Can you believe it!

Two Very Very Special Adoptions to Just the Right Families

These two dogs are amazing and just need the right family to come and save them.

A dog’s good temperament is not necessarily adversely affected when he/she loses any of the 5 senses. Such is the case for Bagel who is blind.

He sounds like a good little guy and needs a family willing to work with his limitation. He doesn’t have to see his person/people with his eyes to know he loves them or show his love for them. He doesn’t have to see them with his eyes to appreciate their love. It is possible it was his person that was blind when he/she turned Bagel in to the shelter. We will never know.

is a very energetic dog who knows she currently has it made – just look at the attitude through in the last photo.

Unfortunately, her sporadic energy spurts and nipping/tugging at fabrics has caused some concern for her present guardians.

She is very loved but they feel she would be more suitable in a home that doesn't have children or won't have many children coming in and out. In addition to this she does not like other female dogs. However, Emily is friendly and DOES have good points. House trained (will ring bells to let you know when she needs to go out) and a cuddler, she is very charming, athletic, playful and good company overall. Her present family does want the best for her and genuinely feel that another environment is more suitable for this pampered beauty. The Seattle Seahawks are helping dogs at local animal shelters and rescues by donating their old towels. ‘Towels for Shelters’ is a campaign organized by Deena Cornish, owner of the Auburn-based Uneek Dogs company.

“Towels are in constant need at animal shelters and rescue organizations,” says Deena. “Most people are not aware that this is an ongoing need. I’m so grateful to the Seahawks for their generosity in participating in this campaign and I know the shelters will be, too.”

A longtime animal advocate and Seahawks employee contacted Uneek about donating their old, used towels that would normally be thrown out. The Seahawks are not only dog lovers, community minded and generous, they are thinking green.

Miracles Happen! Let's Make Another One!

"CHEYENNE IS FOUND !"
This all started 5 days ago - when I got a call from a woman in Sea-Tac (BLESS HER!) who said she had been feeding a stray dog for about a month and she saw the posters and got a better look at Cheyenne and called to tell me that she would come into her yard to eat late at night - so I started camping out in front of her house just waiting - and sure enough she came for dinner each time - she was extremely scared and skittish at first - so for the first 3 nights all I could do is watch her from my car window - because if there was any movement she would bolt - but then last night ~~~~

She has been living in one of those overgrown Port of Seattle lots over by the Groomers and the Airport, and then coming out at night to cross the street and eat from the neighbors who Thank God were feeding her.

Star is so happy to see her too ! And to top it off - it was my husbands 40th Birthday last night.

We are very Blessed ! - And I am so happy to be able to share this incredible news with all the amazing people who have followed her story from the beginning, and came out on their own time to help us look for her and for the many prayers that were said daily - God Bless All Of You!

This is Cody. Cody was in the Tacoma Shelter for about three months.

She was adopted out and returned right away. The lady said she had separation issues and tore up her house. I have not noticed any issues at all. I think she said it just to have a good reason to return her. She is two years old, Lab / Shar Pei mix. Weighs about 45 lbs. Housebroken, cat friendly, not dog aggressive at all.

We have two small children 8 and 3. She likes them and kisses them, however I would like to see her go to a home with a single person or couple with no kids. She deserve a quiet home after all she has been through. Don't get me wrong, SHE IS NOT KID AGGRESSIVE IN ANY WAY, she is just so mellow and laid back, and after the rough start in life, she should be able to sleep in peace.

After three weeks she is now running and playing with my dog. It has taken her awhile to wake up from her depressive state, but she is a happy dog. We really want to adopt her, but I think there may be a home out there that is quieter then mine that she may fit into better.
So...she is the perfect dog for someone that wants a low-maintance dog. She sleeps a lot and likes to just lay where you are. I love this dog. She will only go to the "perfect" home.

This is adorable Buddy.

What a fitting name for a one-year-old boy who wants to be just that - YOUR family's buddy. He is a small coonhound (blue tick or treewalker) and was lost and starving with his bones sticking out. A kind person took him in and gave him love and food. Now he needs a home to call his own!

Buddy is housebroken, white with red/blue/black spots, and loves other doggies. He likes to chase cats but maybe we can tell him that is a no-no. He is curious playful, loving, friendly. He is still underweight and probably should be about 40 lbs. Loves kids.

He is not yet neutered but will be.

Another Great Day at Des Moines Farmers Market

I love selling at farmers markets. They offer you incredible food, flowers, local businesses, crafts and specialty artisan creations. The folks I meet really enjoy being there. They support the community and local farming.

We don't talk enough about how important it is to grow local and micro. There is overwhelming evidence, daily, and at levels we cannot comprehend, that show us how bad it is to grow in mass.

I find the selfish behavior of those that destroy our environment, and don't farm with sustainable practices, ironic, considering they are sealing their own fate. Acting that selfish and not caring beyond the immediate, well lets just say, wealth will not save you. It doesn't make sense.

The farmers market is inspiring. We are a community and the more we gather together, the bigger our support, the better the understanding. The better for the environment.

It is the very farmers at the local markets across the world that grow the finest organic foods for our survival. Of course my favorite part; the dogs. They are so much fun and how great to be able to share them with everyone.

This blog is dedicated to our Uneek Bakers. There is not enough I could say to convey the amazement and pride I have for each and every batch of treats that are hand produced. The dedication to each and every treat is what makes Uneek Treats the best anywhere.

As I am bagging each box of Uneek Treats and marveling at the quality, I find myself eating more than I am bagging. Each treat keeps getting better and better and it is all due to Uneeks' Baker Jane with the part time assistance of her husband Mike. Who taught her everything she knows!

Jane has taken Mikes 20 years of experience and recipe development of Uneek Treats and crafted them into the best quality artisan treats for everyone to enjoy! She is continuously evolving the recipe to give a great taste from nature in each and every treat.

There is no salt, sugar or fillers of any kind. We use the basic and the best. Our Kamut grain is the key to the success of our treat and the foundation for a complete nutritional bite. The ingredients that make up Uneek Treats all have a vital role in helping your body receive the energy it needs to succeed. It is our goal to never use more than absolutely necessary and to only use the best.

I have been found and I am so happy to be home. I was hungry and tired but safe! Thank goodness!

Enzo is a 3 year old, neutered male, red-nosed, Am. Pit Bull Terrier.

He weighs about 65 pounds.

He was last seen last night (Monday, July 23rd) between 8:30pm and 10pm
in his fenced yard in Arlington in the 14000 block of Burn Rd.

He is very friendly with everyone and loves other dogs.

We have been in the shelter for over 2 months! Any dog that can survive the shelter environment for this long is an absolute gem of a pet and friend. Especially when they are there because their owners have passed, as many of these awesome dogs have been through.

Annie's Garden Party Was A GREAT SUCCESS!

Thank you Deborah of Good Citizen Canine

for putting this event together with Katherine of Bamford and Bamford Pots in Tacoma. Here is the results of our efforts!

Thank you for those of you who volunteered, donated money or simply turned out for Annie's Garden Party yesterday at Bamford & Bamford. It was a huge success.

We helped to get new foster homes for 5 dogs from Ginger's Pet Rescue, new permanent homes for 3 and possibly more.

We won't know how much money was raised until we receive some additional donations from vendors, but we think the numbers were pretty good.

If you're interested in donating, please feel free to visit Bamford Pottery at 3001 S. Huson, right below the Fircrest Home Depot. All donations will be split among several very reputable pet rescue organizations.

And, if you are looking for something to do today, Lynette Young (who owns and operates the Clip-N-Clean and 26 Bark Avenue and is a great supporter of all dog and cat causes) is having an anniversary sale at 26th and Alder in Tacoma which goes until 5:00 PM. She's serving Champagn and Chocolate and has many nice things for sale.

Thank you so much for inviting me to Annie's Garden Party! I had a super great time and meeting you and so many others was such a treat. I was also so thrilled to have the opportunity to meet so many of the people on my network as many of them live in the Tacoma area.

I even got two dogs Misha and Dudley adopted out and possibly a pending third one !!!!
I met the groomer from Bark Central who washed dogs at your event and Jennifer Mounts offered to
foster 5 of our death row dogs. WOW...I hit the jackpot at your event as well !!!

Jennifer's wonderful father ended up taking our Barney home and he is fostering him now.
Barney can not be around any other animals and you know how hard finding a foster home for that kind of dog is. I am SO happy.....got so much accomplished yesterday and yes I met all the vendors and plan on doing some event parties with them as well.

Deena was great to see again and super Thanks for the dog food donation you brought from Petapoluza Pet Supply in Fremont WA. The dog food is going to a foster mom that has 4 of my foster dogs!

Also meeting Kate and all her most wonderful and talented Labradors & cattle dog.
Kate, I love every dog you had sitting on that little tiny white stool. What a great show you put on.

Just a short report today as I didn't stay for the whole time.

A beautiful day and some great new Friends stopped by:
Midnight, a Lab/Doxy mix, black as you can guess by his name and talk about following your nose, his was in everything!

Jo Jo, a Poodle and Brussels Griffin. A new mix for us and looked the part.

Cece, a 1 yr. 8 mo Aussie Sheppard and a real beauty. She could be the star of any sheep herding movie.

Queerfest '07

Hey one and all, sorry for the serious delay of this post. I thought it was up and it wasn't. Well I am here to fix all that! Look at this face, we all had a great time!

Long time no write. Well, I attended my first Queer Fest and it was a new experience for me. We made new friends-

This precious little girl was found wandering the streets in Burien near 4th Avenue.

She has no tag or microchip. She is currently being fostered by Sherri and we would like to offer the owner the opportunity to claim her before she is put up for adoption. You may contact Sheri at (206) 245-7129 if you have any questions. She is a happy and energetic little girl who loves to play and gets along well with other dogs.

She also loves people and is fine with children. Perhaps she’s just not use to it but she does get car sick. It seems that she has been loved and perhaps her family is looking for her. Posters and flyers have been put up and distributed to maximize the chances of getting her back home. Carina

My name is Mister Tibbs and I am a 2 yr old Mastiff Mix. I have one blue eye and one brown eye and my foster mom says that I am a very handsome dog! I am neutered up to date with all my shots, and weigh 95 lbs..I was very lucky to be saved out of a high kill shelter down in California and got transported up to Seattle. I am a happy dog, very playful, love attention and I am eager to please you. I get along great with other dogs, older kids but like to chase cats.I do have anxiety separation issues and would love to have someone who can be home a lot. Another dog in the family would be great especially an older dog than me.I do require a fenced in yard so I can get my exercise.

Annie's Garden Party! Everyone is invited.

It's a celebration of Puppies, Plants and Pottery and it's being held at Bamford and Bamford's new location at 3001 South Huson Street, right below the Home Depot in Fircrest (right off Orchard Street). In truth, it's a major fund raising event for several very good pet rescues, including Peninsula Spay and Neuter Project and it's sister group, Coalition Humane, Northwest Greyhound Advocate Program and Ginger Luke's Pet Rescue, which takes death row dogs and helps to foster and rehome them. As you'll see on the flyer, we're offering dog washes, nail clipping (and we're hoping for micro chipping) services for donations as well as raffle items. I'll be there giving a class and a seminar on dog training, Kate Johannson, another trainer will be there from Sit Means Sit, there's going to be music and refreshments. And, if that isn't enough, Bamford & Bamford sells incredible items for the garden. They have exquisite imported pots, lovely plants and fountains. We will also have vendors from the area setting up booths and selling their pet related goods. It should be a great event - don't miss it.

Uneek Treats will be there! Come by our booth and get a box of the best treats on the market today!

For those of you who are interested in helping, we're looking for people who can help with taking donations, directing traffic and keeping traffic flowing (we're expecting an enormous crowd) and making sure the dogs have fresh water. We're looking for some teenages who can help with the dog washing. We will offer the dog washes from noon to 2:00 and then again from 4 - 6:00 and the folks doing it will have 30 minute shifts, so hopefully, we will have enough people to make that work. If any of you know teenagers or young people who might be up for this, please let me know.

Freedom for Chained Dogs All Across America
(and Canada too)

This Year's 4th of July Event marks our 5th Annual Chain Off, and we're going More Grassroots than EVER, with a Goal of at least ONE PERSON per state living chained to a Doghouse for 8-24 hours in our Fabulous "Unchain the 50" Campaign!

We're excited to announce TWO Main Unchain the 50 Events, East Coast and West Coast. The East Coast Event will take place at Piedmont Park, Atlanta, Georgia, details are below, and the West Coast Event will take place at Marymoor Park near Seattle, Washington. A very special thanks to Susan Hartland and Pam Cheatham for their hard work in setting up the locations.

Tammy Grimes will live chained in Atlanta for 24 hours June 30-July 1; anyone else who would like to represent their state by coming and living chained with Tammy is cordially invited. Or, chain yourself in your own community or front yard, the choice is yours. We are lining up speakers, booths, and other events ongoing for the two days. Washington Owners of Flying Disc Dogs (WOOFD2) is proud to host this year’s Hyperflite Skyhoundz Northwest Regional Championship at the Nile Golf and Country Club in Mountlake Terrace, Washington. Participation is open to all residents of the Northwest region and top finishing teams will qualify for invitations to the 2007 Hyperflite Skyhoundz World Championships in Atlanta. WOOFD2 competitions are open to all dogs, including mixed breeds.

WOOFD2 is a non-profit organization dedicated to having fun with our dogs through the sport of canine disc by organizing performances and competitions through private and community events. We promote responsible dog/owner relationships and encourage safety, good sportsmanship and positive training methods.

In addition to competitions WOOFD2 performs exhibitions throughout the Northwest and has performed for a variety of groups including college and professional sports teams, county fairs, 4-H groups and animal shelter fundraisers such as, the Marysville Poochapalooza, Seattle’s Furry 5k, Pierce County Dog-A-Thon, and Kirkland’s Party in the Park. The disc dogs are always a crowd favorite!

Annie Needs a Loving Forever Home!

The sad stories just break your heart. This is Annie, just 8 months old.

She was dumped out of a car, picked up by a good samaritan, who can't keep her. We have only until this weekend to find her a place or he will take her to the Everett Shelter, where she will be euthanized. She is so beauitful and deserves a chance.

This girl currently lives with 2 other dogs and is very sweet. Can anyone help?

What A Great Day at Crown Hill Pet Supply

Uneek Treats had a great day at Crown Hill Pet Supply. I got to meet some great folks and tell them all about our treats. Right when I got there, Simon the cat came to greet me. He promptly made himself at home on our table. He is apparently a bit of an attention hog.

I kept telling folks we make treats for dogs. They were having a hard time believing me with Simon laying on our samples.

I had fun meeting Luke a Pugle, Pug and Beagle mix. Talk about energy. She was all over the place. Luka was running so much she even messed up her hair.

Roberto was soon to follow and what a handsome fellow. He was a rescue from petfinder.com and got his forever home. How great is that!

I met Myla, who is a great photographer. She did not have her girls with her but sent me a photo. Please check out her stuff. You will be most impressed!

Alex is on his last days...

Hello, are you my new Mommy or Daddy?

My mom moves to San Diego and the armed services don't apy enough for my family to keep me. They leave on June 15th.

I am Alex a 4 year-old mixed breed dog loving and playful looking for a fun and loving home.
Current on all shots, has wire kennel, food bowls and toys.

Alex is willing to be trained spent most of his life indoors and I am looking for a home that is patient about teaching him how to walk with a loose leash, take him on long walks and play-tug-o-rope, and catch. He is very smart and can figure out how to get out of most anything.

We are moving out of state and we are unable to take him with us, he has been in our family since 1 year old and he loves car rides!

I am excited and nervous about finding him a good home.
Hello these are the two descriptions of Alex--

We are looking for a permanent home with a fenced yard, a sister or brother, he can run around and play hard with and then have a warm and loving place to sleep.

Alex is great with my son and neighborhood kids he enjoys running around with the neighborhood dogs (sometimes he gets out and does not want to come back until he is ready). He is curious about other animals, and has never acted aggressively towards anyone.

He loves to run, and would love to learn how to run and walk on a leash. We want a family that has experience with dogs and is willing to make Alex a permanent part of their family.

Honey of a girl!

Honey is an incredibly sweet, playful, and charismatic 2 year old female Pit Bull.

She is currently being fostered with a Chihuahua brother with whom she is dying to become playmates with…however she needs someone more her own size to romp around with! She likes to play outside very hard, and is very sneaky when it comes to stealing and hiding shoes lying around the house.

Honey had patella surgery a few weeks ago and will need extra care until she is fully healed. She is looking forward to playing in a large yard and hopefully having an equally lovable playmate. She has shown no sign of aggression whatsoever with her current older male “step” brother. Honey is full of love and has a frolicsome personality unique only to her. Honey will require special attention for her knees for the rest of her life. This certainly doesn’t slow her down, she loves to be outdoors, and even running will most likely be possible in the future. Someone understanding of her health history is a must. She would do well in a home with at least one other dog or a multiple dog household. She’s had very limited, closely guarded interaction with cats, but seems somewhat uninterested and does not have a high prey drive. However, strict supervision would be necessary as with any dog and cat who’ve just met.

Found Puppies Need Homes

Each puppy resembles this one, one is black and white, and two are orange
and white, the pointer seems to be the dominant trait in them. They do the
"pointer stance".

They are currently in Sultan WA, they are about 4 months old, were found playing in a vacant field along US Highway 2 in Startup WA which is outside of Monroe and Sultan. 4 girls. The rescuer is certain they have Pointer breed in them but not sure what else, their fur curls a little but they have
the pointer coloring. Amazing they weren't killed by cars, without a doubt dumped. No people around.

4 abandoned puppies were rescued by a kind woman in Startup WA, near Monroe/Sultan. These puppies amazingly stayed alive in spite of being dumped in an open field next to busy Highway 2. It is four females, roughly 4 to 5 months old, with Pinter in them and something unidentifiable at this time, their fur curls a little and they are adorable."

Furever After Rescue Society Saving LuLu

LULU is at a sanctuary in Virgina that is being forced to shut down and any dogs not in a rescue or home will be euthanised at the end of the June.

We have committed to taking a few we are confident we can find excellent homes for. These dogs would love a flight sponsor so we can bring down their adoption fees, and most importantly a furever home that will be willing to give them the TLC they deserve and love them til their last day. LuLu is a very smart girl and tries to please. She loves romping in the yard with other puppies. Her favorite playmates here are Tomi (brother), Trixie, Trouble, and Blackie. She is now about the size
of her mother and weighs about 30 pounds. Her coat is a combination of wiry with soft and requires very little grooming except brushing as her coat does not mat easily. Anything she can hop up on she will...such as my television set once! ....deck railing....patio table, etc. She also
can climb over 4 or 5 foot fences of chain link or wire, much like a Raccoon would. SO....a SECURE fenced yard would be needed for her, preferably a wooden privacy fence. Lulu is a charmer and very entertaining with her antics. Not to be trusted with cats. Our adoption process includes an application, home visit and interview- we look for the best match for our dogs and may receive multiple applications for the same pet . We place the dogs in the best home for
them. If a home visit is not feasible we will be unable to adopt to you.We do not have a facility but rely on foster homes, the more foster homes we have the more dogs we can save. Adoptions include up to date shots, spay/neuter, heartworm testing/treatment/prevention, worming/deflea, registration with Petwatch, microchip/tattoo, health certificate and testing, transport to Calgary ,1 month health insurance, great deals with trainers and a doggybag to get you off to the right start with your new family member and lifetime support.

Another option for adoption is to be preapproved- once you have completed our process we can save a dog from a high kill shelter (Typically in Louisiana and the Gulf States) that would be a great
family fit for you, there are hundreds of amazing dogs in shelters dying every day- help us save just one (or two!) more and place it in a loving, responsible home. We call this our foster to adopt option- ask us for details. We ask for a donation to adopt , this goes towards the expenses involved
with saving dogs from at risk situations, we are 100% nonprofit volunteer rescue that relies on donations to continue our work, we receive no government grants.

Help for Horses, Please Take Action

I have news to report to you on the issue of horse slaughter in the United
States.

First, despite many threats that horse slaughter would be legalized by a
stealth floor amendment in the final, intense days of the 2007 Texas state
legislative session, we're thrilled to report that the effort did not
succeed. The flood of phone calls from you Texans really had an impact-we
heard about them from every office. We were lobbying right up until the last
moment and running ads inTexas newspapers, and the calls and letters made an enormous difference.

Second, Illinois passed a ban on horse slaughter for human consumption with
the full support of the Governor and the Illinois Department of Agriculture!
However, only a week after the victorious passage of this state bill, the
owners of the horse slaughter plant in Illinois filed suit to overturn the
law. An Illinois federal judge issued a temporary restraining order
overriding the new state law, and that order will remain in force until a
June 14 hearing. This means that horse slaughter can temporarily resume at
the Illinois plant-which can butcher more than 500 horses a week. Our
attorneys are fighting back in every way they can, but we need your help.

These state bans, and this temporary setback, once again highlight the
urgent need for passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R.
503/S. 311)-a federal bill to prohibit horse slaughter for human consumption
and the transport of horses across the border for slaughter. We cannot sit
back now while our horses are still being sent to Mexico and Canada for
brutal slaughter in large numbers.

TAKE ACTION
Please make brief, polite phone calls today to your U.S. Representative,
Rick Larsen, at (202) 225-2605 and your U.S. Senator, Patty Murray, at (202)
224-2621 and urge them to co-sponsor H.R. 503/S. 311 to stop the slaughter
of American horses in this country or over the border.

Making a call is easy. A staff member will take your message and pass it to
your legislator. You can say:

"Hello, my name is [your name]. I am a constituent, calling from [your town,
your state] to urge [Representative Larsen/Senator Murray] to please
co-sponsor H.R. 503/S. 311 today to help stop the slaughter of American
horses-in the U.S. or over the border. Horses are not bred or raised for
this purpose; yet perfectly healthy horses are bought by the horse slaughter
industry to be converted into a foreign delicacy. Our horses deserve
better."

Let's finish off these foreign-owned horse butchering plants and send them
packing for good. Join me in pushing for more co-sponsors and swift passage
of H.R. 503/S. 311 in Congress!
